Glynn Emergency Operations Center Now Activated

Though there are no major effects currently anticipated in the Golden Isles from Hurricane Michael, the Glynn County Emergency Operations Center is going to open this afternoon to track and prepare for any possible ill effects of the storm.

The EOC met this morning at eleven for its first briefing from the National Weather Service. The current data shows possible tropical storm conditions arriving in the area overnight Wednesday. There will be another briefing this afternoon at 2:30.

During the meeting EMA Director Jay Wiggins stated that Michael is not anticipated as an evacuation event but rather “we consider this a shelter-in-place event.” In case of  severe tropical storm effects, the county has decided to close  its offices  at two tomorrow  and reopen noon Thursday..

The NWS says that marshy areas and areas prone to flooding will probably do so when Michael brushes the area.

Georgia Power’s Paolo Albuquerque says the company is expecting conditions similar to those experienced during Tropical Storm Hermine, with high winds and possible tornadoes.

Wiggins says he does NOT anticipate the Causeway’s closure. While some partial flooding is possible, the belief at this point is that the Causeway will remain open for the duration.
