Just before 9AM today (2/6/18) an accidental tsunami warning was issued for parts of Coastal Georgia by the National Weather Service. Some residents received the warning via the weather service's Accuweather app.
Matthew Kent, Glynn County Public Information Director, was quoted saying "While Accuweather was conducting a drill with their app this morning they mistakenly sent out a tsunami warning for Coastal Georgia," adding "There is no tsunami warning at this time. While the source is cited as the National Weather Service Office in Jacksonville, this was simply a drill and was not meant to be sent to the public. There is no reason to be alarmed about a tsunami."
The warning reportedly sent from the Tsunami Warning Center in Alaska to the National Weather Service in Jacksonville and Charleston. In a Facebook past the national Tsunami Warning Center stated "The National Tsunami Warning Center did NOT issue a tsunami Warning, Watch, or Advisory for any part of the United States or Canada this morning." US National Weather Service Charleston Sc took to Facebook as well saying "A monthly Tsunami Warning test was issued around 830 am by the National Tsunami Warning Center. We have been notified that some users received this test message as an actual Tsunami Warning. A Tsunami Warning is NOT in effect." The national Weather Service Jacksonville FL stated "Tsunami Warning was issued mistakenly sent by an app. There is no Tsunami Warning in effect. It was just a Tsunami test message." Weather service officials are investigating the incident at this time.
